Josh Levin at Slate has put together a really creative widget that explores 144 ways America could end. Designed as a tribute to Alexander Demandt, who, as Levin reports:
"...set out in the 1980s to collect every theory ever given for why Rome fell. The final tally: 210, including attacks by nomads on horseback, blood poisoning, decline of Nordic character, homosexuality, outflow of gold, and vaingloriousness."
Will the fault lie in technology? Our culture? Or maybe it'll be animals (what, every zoo keeper leaves the gate unlocked one night???). How about a combination? The widget lets you select multiple screens to arrive at just the right kind of apocolypse. I bet this tool is spreading like wildfire among hollywood writers right now.
